Flat irons can be used to get shiny and voluminous curls.
When it comes to curling hair, most people assume that a curling iron or hot rollers are a must. However, if a person has an iron, it is still possible to create full and beautiful curls. In fact, a flat iron snail is often more bouncy and more natural looking than those created with traditional curling techniques. To get a flat curl, twist your hair around the hot plates of the flat iron instead of just sliding it over your hair like you would when straightening. The flat curl method can be a little awkward at first, but with practice it’s usually easy to perfect.

Unlike curling with a curling iron or hot rollers, the flat iron should not be placed on the ends of the hair and curled upwards. Instead, the flat iron should be placed about 2 inches (about 5 cm) from the root of the hair, with the plates of the flat iron closed on the hair as you would when straightening it. When a person reaches the ends, the iron is rotated a half to one and a half turns in the direction in which they want to curl, wrapping the hair around the plates. The direction of the curl can be changed for each section of hair to give the hairstyle a more natural look. Then the iron is pulled along the hair, moving in the same direction as the person turned the iron – you will have a curl with the iron as soon as the hair is released.
The size of the curl can be changed simply by taking larger or smaller strands of hair between the iron plates. Also, the speed at which the flat iron is moved through the hair affects the curls: moving slowly through the hair will result in firmer curls, while moving faster will result in looser, more natural waves. To protect the hair and make the curls look shinier, the hair should be sprayed with a heat protectant before curling with the flat iron. Subsequently, hairspray or some type of styling product should be used to help maintain the curls.
If a person is interested in trying flat iron curls, it is best to choose a flat iron with a curved edge because the rounded shape will result in a prettier curl. Straight edged irons can create unattractive creases in the hair. Despite the initial challenge of creating a flat iron curl, it can be a more profitable investment than a flat iron or hot rollers because of the versatility they offer.
