What is the difference between a dust ruffle and a bed skirt?

Dusty bed skirts and ruffles serve the same purpose.

While many people tend to consider a dust ruffle and bed skirt to be the same type of bedding accessory, this is not the case. While both are intended to bridge the gap between the edge of the comforter or bedspread and the floor, they are actually constructed differently and are placed on the bed by different means.

A dust ruffle is a pleated or pleated piece of fabric that is usually long enough to fill the space between the top of the shower stall and the floor. The steering wheel is actually a circular construction configured to comfortably fit and hug the bed frame. Many are equipped with a stretch band around the top so you can slide around the sides of the springs and be held in place by the band. Slots in each corner allow you to fit the ruffle around bedposts without bunching up.

In recent years, dust ruffles have also been manufactured to use hook-and-loop (also known as Velcro®) fasteners for installation, rather than relying on the elastic band. Half of the zippers are placed at strategic points along the top of the ruffle, with their complementary sections located along the sides of the bed frames. When joined, the sections hold the steering wheel securely, but also make it easy to remove for cleaning.

In contrast, a bed skirt does not involve the use of an elastic band or zippers to stay in place. It is constructed as a solid cloth body and a pleated or ruffled outer section sewn on three sides. To use a bed skirt, it is necessary to insert the body between the mattress and the base. The outer section is positioned to hang the two long sides and the foot of the bed. Does not provide floor covering at the head of the bed.

In most bedroom settings, a dust ruffle and bed skirt provide the same look when the bed is fully made. The color or pattern of the skirt or ruffle should complement the color scheme of the bedding and should be constructed of a linen material similar to a sheet or comforter. This will help give the bed a unified look and allow the material to enhance the overall look of the bed.
