Wolf snakes can eat frogs.
Lycodon capucinus, or the common wolf snake, is a reptile that is widely found in Southeast Asia. Wolf snakes are members of the Colubridae family and, depending on their species, range in color from light brown to dark brown. These types of snakes are not poisonous.
As there are several species of wolf snakes in various countries, they are often known by many different names. Some of them include Hindi Garar, Marathi Kandva, and Singhalese Tel Karawala. Although snakes are considered to be very adaptable and can sometimes be found in cities, they are usually kept in rural areas and small towns.
While not poisonous, a wolfsnake bite can be painful.
Wolf snakes have 17 rows of scales that make up the middle sections of their body. Instead of the fangs that are typical of most snakes, the wolf snake features a set of elongated teeth similar to the canines that a wolf would have. This is how the snake got its name. Depending on the specific species of snake, it can range from light brown with white spots, to dark brown skin with a purple tint with no spots or stripes.
Most baby snakes have some type of stripe or spot at birth. When snake eggs hatch, they appear with white or yellow markings. In many species, however, these markings fade over time as the snakes reach adulthood.
Due to the spots on some varieties of wolf snakes, the creatures are sometimes mistaken for venomous krait and killed. Krait snakes, however, can be distinguished by their triangular shapes and thinner stripes. Younger wolf snakes with colored spots also tend to have a less frequent color pattern than krait snakes.
Small lizards such as geckos and geckos make up the majority of the wolf snake’s diet. Snakes will also eat frogs when available. When snakes take up residence in people’s homes, they can also eat mice.
Snakes of this species that live in human homes often occupy small crevices and go unnoticed. While not venomous, the snake will still attack when threatened, inflicting a painful bite. If the blow cannot be executed due to lack of space or if the snake is blocked, it usually retracts in a spiral, lowering its head into the center of its body in a spiral.
A separate species of wolf snake exists in Africa. These snakes are members of the Lycophidion family. The little snake can grow up to 20 inches (50 cm) long. Like its Asian counterpart, it eats mainly small lizards.
