What are biocosmetics?

Organic cosmetics consist of face makeup and lotions that do not contain harsh chemicals or artificial stabilizers. Products that are not labeled as biocosmetics may contain ingredients that are harmful to the environment or to those who use them. Biocosmetics are also called ecological cosmetics since they are made with natural or organic substances. Conservationists and animal rights advocates often prefer biocosmetics, as these products are not often tested on animals.

Many people who eat an organic diet also favor the use of biocosmetics. Bio or organic cosmetics are usually made from plant derivatives. These herbal ingredients are considered a safer alternative to conventional cosmetics made with synthetic additives. Chemicals added to standard synthetic cosmetics can be absorbed into the bloodstream. This absorption can lead to a buildup of toxins over time.

Most cosmetics use artificial chemicals as stabilizers.

Biocosmetics do not contain ingredients that can cause skin allergies in people with sensitive skin. Natural cosmetics do not contain oil, preservatives or alcohol. Many of these man-made ingredients can cause negative effects like wrinkles and skin peeling. Organic cosmetics are considered a healthier option for the skin and body. Furthermore, biocosmetics will not contribute to air pollution or toxic waste.

Instead of making cosmetics with paraffin stabilizers or animal by-products, biocosmetics are often made with natural vegetable oil or olive oil. Plant and fruit extracts are also often used in green cosmetics. Ingredients like pure Aloe Vera extract are used to replenish moisture and protect the skin. If any cosmetic is to be certified biosafe, it must not contain more than 5% artificial ingredients. Irradiation is not typical in the manufacture of organic or natural cosmetics.

Other standards must be met for a product to be labeled as a biocosmetic. Certified organic cosmetics cannot contain agricultural substances. In most cases, biocosmetic products will have to undergo rigorous quality control testing before being sold to the public.

Dermatologists often recommend organic skin care products for patients with acne or rosacea, as natural cosmetics are less likely to cause skin irritation. Organic products are also used to reduce the appearance of minor burn scars and stretch marks and to promote healing. Natural skin care products are often used in spas and clinics and are often expensive.
