A butane curling iron is a cordless curling iron built to run on butane, a flammable gas. By fueling the curling iron with butane, the gas heats the barrel of the curling iron, allowing the user to curl hair virtually anywhere. These curling irons are generally smaller than traditional curling irons and are designed to be portable. They are usually easily packed into bags or purses and are often used by travelers or women who need to style or touch up their hair at work or school. Stylists who may be working in areas where they don’t have easy access to an electrical outlet can also make considerable use of a butane styler.
Standard hair curlers are usually designed to be plugged into an outlet. In many places this is not difficult as most buildings are equipped with electricity. In some cases, however, a person may travel to a place where electricity is not readily available. Also, some facilities may have electricity, but outlets may not be conveniently located. An example of such a location might be an office or school bathroom, where it may be difficult for a woman who needs to comb her hair to find an exit that provides easy access to a mirror. A butane curling iron allows her to style her hair wherever she wants.
Old-style butane curling irons typically required users to fill the butane chamber with a can of butane, which can usually be obtained at drugstores, supermarkets, or hardware stores. The modern butane curling iron, on the other hand, generally uses cartridges that are easily attached and removed from the iron. Using cartridges can minimize the risk of exposure to butane gas and can make refilling your curling iron a breeze. As of 2011, passengers can generally take a butane curler on airline flights to most destinations, but they are not allowed to use the curler while on the plane. Carrying extra refill cartridges is not allowed.
The main criticism of the butane straightener is that it does not get hot enough to properly curl all types of hair, and in some cases, the curls may not last. People may find that their experiences with different types of butane curling irons vary considerably. As such, users of these portable curling irons may need to try several brands before finding one that gives them the desired results.
