Many smaller cantilever rack systems use a tag and slot mounting method which consists of a tag on the horizontal support that locks into a corresponding slot on the vertical member. This allows for quick and easy installation and makes it easy to store the racks themselves if they are no longer needed. Larger systems often use bolted horizontal beams, but are still simple and quick to build. Cantilever units are also often modular in design, allowing multiple units to be joined together to expand an existing system.
