The conger eel is one of the largest members of the eel family Congridae. It is usually gray or black in color with a prominent fin that runs the length of its back, called a dorsal fin. Eels are large, predatory fish that can range from 2 inches (5 cm) to more than 12 feet (3.7 m) in length and weigh more than 125 pounds (57 kg). They are mainly found in the Atlantic Ocean, and many varieties of eels are valued as fierce game fish and are used in fine cuisine, especially Japanese sushi.
Even in sushi, eel meat is usually cooked.
The conger eel is any of the more than one hundred varieties of the Congridae family in the animal kingdom. Most eels are found in shallow water, although some live in the deep ocean. They feed on animals such as fish, crustaceans, squid and octopus. Conger eels are different from electric eels, which are actually knifefish and not eels, as an eel has no method of stunning its prey.
