A central processing unit (CPU) is the main microchip in a computer, while a CPU fan is the dedicated fan that helps keep the processor cool. Processors generate heat from internal electrical energy. The more demand that is put on a CPU, the harder it runs and the hotter it gets. If the CPU gets too hot, it can make mistakes and eventually ‘melt down’, becoming completely inoperable. A CPU fan works in conjunction with a heat sink to prevent this.
CPU fans often work in conjunction with heat sinks to keep the computer cool.
A heat sink is a metal device that sits directly on top of the CPU, drawing heat away from the chip into its aluminum fin-like structure. The CPU fan connects to the heat sink and draws air through the fins. By dissipating the heat attracted by the heat sink, the fan indirectly cools the processor.

A CPU fan can come in a variety of sizes and is usually sold with a copper and/or aluminum heatsink. Specs include diameter and whether the CPU fan uses ball bearings, considered quieter than bearingless fans. The fan and heat sink will also indicate which processors they are compatible with or can cool.
Processors sold with a heat sink and CPU fan are usually guaranteed for 5 years, while those sold without (but not always) are guaranteed for one year. While processors may be identical, manufacturers know that improper cooling can dramatically shorten a CPU’s lifespan. For a CPU sold without a heatsink or fan, the manufacturer does not guarantee that the customer will provide adequate cooling.
Overclockers are computer enthusiasts that use CPUs, making them run faster than marketed specs. This causes the chips to get hotter than normal. Many overclockers prefer to provide their own fans and advanced heat sinks to protect overclocked CPUs. These heat sinks are typically taller than average, and the CPU fans are typically more powerful and quieter, adding less noise to the system than many commercial fans.
