A text is a written or oral discourse that has internal coherence. Descriptive, on the other hand, is one that describes something (that is, provides information so that people can represent it in their minds).
The descriptive text, in this way, makes the description of some element. You can focus on a person, an animal, a landscape, an object, or a situation, to name a few possibilities. The enumeration of characteristics is the main characteristic of the descriptive text. While a narrative text recounts facts and an argumentative text supports it, a descriptive text focuses on mentioning particularities for the construction of a representation of the element in question.
An example of descriptive text is the following: “The house was big and old. An oak table with four chairs dominated the dining room, whose walls were painted orange. In the master bedroom there was a double bed with an iron headboard. The smallest room had three children’s beds. As you can see, this text describes some characteristics of a house. In addition to everything we have explained so far, it is important to know the set of characteristics that identify all the descriptive text:
-It is very varied since it can be used to describe physical and non-physical things.
-It is detailed, because it must have the objective of transmitting to whoever reads it what is the element on which it really revolves.
-You can resort to the use of certain “licenses” or language tools such as hyperbole. Descriptive texts can even be full of qualifying adjectives that give a very subjective tone: “she was a beautiful woman, with golden hair and striking blue eyes. Her long legs seemed to stretch to infinity, as did her slender arms. Her sculpted and curvaceous body, on the other hand, made men rave.” In this case, adjectives such as “beautiful”, “marker” and “statuary” contribute to the description made by the text. Likewise, we must be aware of other relevant aspects of this type of text, such as these:
-It has three fundamental functions: define, explain and incite.
-Always tend towards what is objectivity. And it is that something focuses on aspects such as parts of the article in question, its mission, how it works, how useful it is, its main specifications…
-In its content, an absolutely logical ordering of the listed resources must prevail at all times.
-As a general rule, it is common for many technical details to be used in relation to the element to be treated.
-Basically within this type of texts we can differentiate the existence of three clearly differentiated groups: the technical ones, which serve to explain and expose the operation of any object; scientists, which show the procedure followed in a given investigation, as well as its result; and social, which refer to the behaviors and attitudes of people.
