Nail polish for a chip-free manicure should last up to two weeks.
A chip-free manicure is a hybrid type of gel manicure that claims to make nail polish last up to two weeks. First, the nails are prepared with enamel and a little alcohol so that the products last longer. A specialized base coat is then applied, followed by multiple coats of a colored gel. The manicure is completed with an exclusive top coat. This manicure can only be done at a nail salon and can only be removed with specialized acetone wraps.
Ensuring that the products used to create a chip-free manicure adhere to the nails is an essential step in the process. Before anything is applied, the nails are thoroughly polished using a six-stage polishing process, working from a medium grit to a smooth, shiny surface. The nails are then rubbed with isopropyl alcohol to clean them of any dust or dirt that could make it difficult for the product to adhere.
The first coat of a chip-free manicure is an ultraviolet (UV) base coat. This is a thinner version of traditional gel nail treatments that helps reshape the natural nail without adding length, as well as protects nails from staining. Once applied, the coating is dried under a specialized UV light so that the nails can heal and harden.
After the base coat, a colored gel product is applied to the nails in thin layers. Depending on the color, one to three coats may be needed for even coverage. This product is a mix of traditional nail polish and clear gel, providing great staying power. After each layer is applied, the nails are dried again in a UV dryer. Allowing your nails to fully heal between each coat is one of the main reasons this type of manicure can last so much longer than others.
For added shine and protection, a UV nail polish is applied after colouring. This product is similar to base coat, both based on a thinner version of traditional gel. This product helps increase shine and protects the top layers of color from wear. As with other phases of a chip-free manicure, the finish must be fully cured under UV light.
The entire process must be done in a salon by a licensed manicurist, as the products needed for a chip-free manicure are not within the reach of the average consumer. Unlike regular nail polish, a chip-free manicure cannot be safely removed at home. Salons use acetone-soaked nail bandages to break down the gel coating and achieve a safe separation between the product and the natural nail. Attempting to peel off a chip-free manicure or remove it at home can lead to damage.
