The hotouth is a type of sunfish found primarily in the warmer waters of lakes, ponds, and marshy areas. Most hotmouths are found near the bottom of these waters because they are bottom feeders. These fish are typically yellow or olive in color, and the males have red eyes during the breeding season. Because of this, some people refer to this type of fish as sea bream or sea bream. Warmouth can grow up to 1 foot (31 cm) and can weigh up to 2.25 pounds (1 kg). Most of these fish tend to be very similar to bass, and many anglers who catch them mistakenly believe they caught it.

Warmouth fish are native to North America and can be found as far south as the Rio Grande, Mexico, and as far north as Ontario, Canada. Most of these fish prefer bodies of water with a lot of mud and vegetation on the bottom to be able to hide and look for prey without being seen. The adult hotmouth often eats smaller fish and molluscs, and its young generally feed on insects and zooplankton. Unlike many other similar types of fish, these fish can tolerate polluted and low-oxygen water, which probably explains why they seem to be prevalent in swamps and lakes.
The male hotmouth fish creates the nest during the breeding season, which normally takes place during the spring and summer months. In the nest, the female can lay up to 50,000 eggs, but usually not less than 4,000. The male fish fertilize the eggs and protect the nest during the incubation period. The chicks only take three days to incubate and hatch, usually remaining in the nest area for about a week before leaving for good. The young, hot mouth normally reaches sexual maturity at around 10 cm in length.
Warmouth has some natural predators, including turtles, snakes, and large fish, as well as some terrestrial predators such as herons. Most of these fish live up to eight or nine years in the wild, but are considered endangered species in Canada. Wetlands in Canada are beginning to disappear due to drainage and some measures are being taken to ensure the survival of this species of fish. Some of these fish currently live in protected conditions in various areas of Canada.
