What is anxiety disorder?

A disorder is a change in health or a state of mental disorder. The concept refers to an imbalance that disturbs the meaning or behavior of a subject.

Anxiety, however, is a state of anxiety or agitation of the mind. Although it is not always pathological (on the contrary, it is a common emotion that fulfills a function linked to survival), anxiety can accompany some illnesses, such as neurosis. In a state of anxiety, the body’s dopaminergic system is activated in response to certain problems or dangers. When this innate characteristic becomes pathological, we are in the presence of an anxiety disorder.

There are several types of anxiety disorders. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a constant and excessive worry about various issues, even if the individual does not suffer from any particular major problem. GAD is reflected in sleep problems, irritability, frequent tiredness and muscle contractures. Stress, depression or genetic factors are three of the main causes that can lead a person to suffer from this generalized anxiety disorder. In this sense, it is also important to note that people with relatives who suffer from it, women, pregnant women, people with learning difficulties or who are mired in addictions such as alcoholism or any other are the most likely types of drugs. Medication is the most frequent instrument to carry out the treatment of those who have to deal with an anxiety disorder. Thus, the intake of antidepressants or anxiolytics is usually indicated, although it is also true that techniques that can reduce stress levels, such as meditation or physical exercise, are also recommended to patients. Secondary anxiety disorders are related to the consumption of certain substances (such as caffeine, cocaine or marijuana), a medical condition (hyperthyroidism, hypoglycemia) or other psychological disorders (phobias, anorexia nervosa or others). Likewise, we cannot ignore the existence of what is known as separation anxiety disorder that occurs as a result of the person in question, for different reasons, being away from home or from fundamental people in his life such as his parents. . However, this can also be caused by the fear of losing them. Stress, excessive worry, fear of being alone without the aforementioned subjects with whom this strong attachment relationship is maintained, or frequent nightmares about this possible separation are some of the main symptoms experienced by those who suffer from this disorder.

Finally, we can mention social anxiety disorders, which appear related to meetings and social encounters. Thus, those who suffer from this disorder feel uncomfortable and insecure when speaking or participating in parties, for example. The problem lies in the exaggerated fear of being subjected to a negative judgment of the other.
