What is Barbicide®?

Barbicide® brand talcum powder.

Barbicide® is a disinfectant used in hair salons, hospitals and other areas where germs and fungi can be easily transmitted. When used correctly, Barbicide® kills surface germs, fungi and viruses, including Hepatitis B and C and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This famous blue disinfectant has been used since the late 1940s in barbershops. The Barbicide® brand has expanded to include hospital-grade disinfectant products, disinfectant products, talcum powder and more.

Barbicide is a commonly used disinfectant in beauty salons.

In 1947, a chemistry professor named Maurice King created a barbershop disinfectant in the bathtub of his New York apartment. His mix of chemicals ended up revolutionizing the way barbershops do business. The risk of infection and cross-contamination between clients was no longer an issue.

King’s brother James was instrumental in marketing the new product. It quickly gained popularity as a salon disinfectant in the United States. Over time, its popularity spread to other countries.

It is suggested to change this disinfectant at least once a week when used in hairdressing salons. The disinfecting properties last much longer than that, according to its manufacturer, King Research Inc. The characteristic blue color does not change over time.

The entire combination of ingredients in Barbicide® remains a proprietary secret. The active ingredient is alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride. Barbicide® also includes a mixture of isopropyl alcohol, sodium nitrite, benzylammonium chloride, and water.

The Barbicide® brand includes many products that are useful in salons. Shortly after the original blue disinfectant was created, Maurice King created another useful product for dissolving hair. This powder is used in hairbrushes, scissors, and combs to remove hair and prevent hair buildup.
