What is nail polish dilution?

Polish thinner can be used to extend the life of nail polish.

Enamel thinner is a chemical solution that restores thick enamel to its original consistency and helps extend the life of enamel. Too thick a polish can result in a polish that is difficult to apply and/or does not last as long on the nail as a polish of the correct consistency. The correct consistency of nail polish should allow at least two coats of nail polish to be applied before needing to brush again.

It is important to note that common nail polish thinner can inhibit the fast-drying properties of certain nail polishes. So look for thinners specifically designed for use with regular nail polish.

The use of thinner generally includes the following steps:

Add a few drops of thinner to nail polish. Some bottles come with a dropper or dropper spout to make this step easier. Mix well. Some instructions will suggest “shake” fine; however, the agitation can create air bubbles in the nail polish that will become apparent when buffing the nails. A better alternative is to hold the bottle between the palms of your hands and roll from side to side until the thinner is fully incorporated into the polish. Wait a few minutes before applying the polish. The instructions recommend waiting up to 20 minutes before applying the freshly diluted polish.

Darker nail polish colors are more susceptible to clumping.

Ingredients found in traditional nail polish thinner generally include any of the following: acetone, butyl acetate, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, hexane, isopropyl alcohol, or heptane. These ingredients added to the original nail polish act as solvents, as well as replacing some ingredients that may have evaporated over time.

Many of these ingredients are harmful to surfaces and potentially explosive, so precautions must be taken in their use, including:

Store and use diluent away from heat, sparks, and flame. Do not smoke while using this product. Do not allow thinner to drip onto wood or synthetic surfaces as damage may occur.

The correct consistency of nail polish should allow for at least two coats of nail polish to be applied before wiping off the brush.

Since certain ingredients in nail thinner are considered by some to be toxic, there are non-toxic alternatives. The ingredients can consist of ethanol and orange oil, a natural solvent. The best source for natural, non-toxic versions is the Internet, although some well-stocked beauty supply stores may carry them.
