Traslaticio is an adjective that, in terms of the meaning of a term, refers to the fact that it is different from the most common or original. The concept, which can also be called translaticio, comes from the Latin word translaticius.
The translational meaning of a word, therefore, is neither the usual nor the primitive. On the contrary, although it maintains a link with it, it is a meaning that refers to something different. Some examples of translaticio See the case of the noun “giraffe”. The first meaning indicated by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) in its dictionary refers to a ruminant mammal that can measure up to five meters in height. In slang Let us remember that jargon is a language not formally registered that is used in a certain field, generally professional. This series of terms and expressions is very useful to communicate technical messages between people who share the necessary knowledge to understand them. Let’s look at an example of translation meaning that is not captured by dictionaries, even though it is widely used in a specific jargon. It is the verb to elbow, which receives the following three meanings from the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy: “make a movement with the elbows”; “Hit someone or something with your elbows”; “Follow someone or a social group regularly and treat them as peers.” In programming, however, this verb is often used as a synonym for “write code”. In this way, it is possible to find the following sentence: “As soon as I finish coding this function, I start the test”. Although in this case we might think that the verb encode is more appropriate, none of its meanings accurately expresses this action, especially for this field. That is why it was “necessary” to add a translational meaning to elbow.

When learning a foreign language As we can imagine, translatable meanings are not an exclusive concept of our language. On the contrary, it probably exists in most, if not all. This must be taken into account when studying, to avoid the typical mistakes that some of the most popular courses and textbooks lead us to. If a foreigner who is studying Spanish comes across any of the terms used above, used in unusual contexts, it is likely that he will not understand their meaning. The important thing is to be open to this possibility, and never underestimate the power of consulting, whether in a dictionary or in a specialized community, to further discover the depth of the language.
