What are invisible braids?

Invisible braids are small individual braids that are barely visible. The braids are so thin that at first glance they look like individual strands of hair. Synthetic or human hair is braided into existing hair to make it appear thicker and longer. Braids start at the root and synthetic or human hair is tightly braided at these roots. Depending on the length and fullness of the hair, this process can take up to five hours to complete.

Invisible braids stop one inch (2.54 cm) below the roots. This is another reason why they are so hard to see. The braids stop at this point and the rest of the hair is left free at the ends. Natural hair is combined with synthetic or human hair for a fuller look, but a particular style can be incorporated after this process is complete. These braids work best with shorter hair.

Longer hair can be damaged if invisible braids are placed on it. The rest of the unbraided hair flows freely and you can see the break where the inch-long braid ends. With shorter hair, this does not usually happen. Most real hair is braided so there is no danger of further breakage. Braids can also be used to keep very short hair healthy and neat while it grows out.

Textures and colors should be considered when buying synthetic or human hair to use in invisible braids. For example, if natural hair is curly, purchased human or synthetic hair must also be curly. This ensures that there will be no problem of hair breakage when styling. Synthetic hair color should also match natural hair. Lightly lightened synthetic hair can be used to enhance natural hair.

Invisible braids can be left in your hair for a long time if properly cared for. Shampoo and conditioners should only be used once a week. Washing too much can make braids look loose and unsightly. If a conditioner is needed to control the hair, a mixture of water and coconut oil can be sprayed on the hair.

Removing these braids is not a quick process. Removing them can take twice as long as putting in the braids. Do not pull on synthetic hair or try to untangle it. This can damage the hair and cause breakage.
