A person in this position is often called a laboratory assistant or technician, biological technician or assistant. Their work is usually carried out in universities and colleges, and most of it in laboratories. Some in this position may work for government or research organizations or in the private sector in food, drug and chemical processing settings.

Viewing microscopic objects through a microscope is a typical part of a microbiologist’s job.

This position requires skills in all aspects of laboratory operations. Typically, the technician must gather all the materials a scientist needs to perform experiments. Depending on the nature of the research, this may require the collection of substances from other laboratories and industries or from the environment. Typical materials needed for testing include samples of animal meat or skin, and human or animal blood. Other research projects may require the collection of soil, water, and certain types of medicine or food.

Biology technicians are typically supervised by a scientist who provides guidance on research methods and protocols.

You are usually expected to have the correct tools to collect clean samples for transport in sterile containers. If the materials need to be stored for future use, the technician usually needs to know the proper procedures to follow. If samples are not handled or stored correctly, the results of the experiment may be questionable.

Other duties of a biologist often include calculating and analyzing test results and preparing tables or graphs of the results for analysis by scientists. You may also be asked to set up measurement and analytical devices for scientists to use in tests. Ultimately, the person in this position is usually responsible for the cleanliness of the laboratory and its equipment.
