What is the vortex?

Vortex is a notion that derives from the Latin vortex. The concept names a flow that rotates in a spiral direction, such as a whirlpool or eddy. More precisely, it can be said that a vortex is one that has vorticity.

The term vorticity is defined as a quantity that quantifies the rotation carried out by a fluid, and is used precisely in the field of fluid mechanics, as well as in meteorology. From a mathematical point of view, the vorticity is defined by the speed field of the rotor and is a vector field. The rotor is also known as the curl and is a vector operator that expresses the tendency of a vector field to induce rotation about a point.

It can be stated that in the context of fluid dynamics, a vortex is formed when the fluid moves in a circle, like a spiral or helix. This type of movement can be found in natural phenomena, such as the aforementioned eddies. In a navigable body of water, a vortex can sink a ship, which gets caught in the circular motion of the water. In Lake Ontario (which stretches between Canada and the United States), for example, in one sector there is the so-called Marysburgh Vortex, where several shipwrecks have occurred. Some maintain that supernatural phenomena occur in this place that affect ships. On the other hand, the central area of a hurricane is called a vortex (the intense wind that forms a circle and is also called a cyclone). That is why we speak of a polar vortex, a hurricane that occurs in the troposphere and the stratosphere in the polar regions. It is important to mention that the Arctic polar vortex and the Antarctic polar vortex have different characteristics. In tropical cyclones, their center is called the eye, the area where the fury of the wind is least. It is a space that can measure up to 65 kilometers in diameter and is surrounded by what is known as the wall of the eye, where strong and strong storms occur. These spinning wall structures are called mesovortices, which are relatively small and resemble the suction vortices of multi-vortex tornadoes. There the wind blows up to 10% faster than in the rest of the wall. Although they usually revolve around the eye, they are able to pass through it.

There are those who believe in the existence of the time vortex, which is also known as the space-time vortex or space-time vortex. It is a kind of tunnel that connects two different spaces, whether they are two locations or two points in time within the same place, and it is the basis of many of the time machines present in fiction. In other words, to travel through time, you have to go through one of these vortexes. There are many testimonies of people who claim to have experienced situations that are impossible to explain with the tools that science provides us; Stories of distortions in the flow of time, or people, vehicles or entire cities appearing or disappearing are some of the most common examples. The tendency of the majority is to accuse these individuals of liars and opportunists, since many of them get their “fifteen minutes of fame”; However, until we have enough evidence to completely discredit them, we can only limit ourselves to not believing their words. Finally, “Vórtice marxista” is the title of an album released in 1998 by Babasónicos, an Argentine rock band.
