A vibrating screen is a large mechanical tool used to separate solids, liquids, and powders. Industries as diverse as mining operations, chemical companies, and construction companies use these tools to help sort and clean items. Using gravity, motion, and mesh screens, these tools do the work of multiple people in a fraction of the time.
A vibrating screen separator is about the size of a metal garbage can. It is often constructed of solid metal such as steel and has two open sides so users can visually monitor the progress of the screen. Most vibrating screens have four or more levels of screens stacked on top of each other. Screens are made of wire mesh and come in a variety of sizes to suit different jobs.
The vibrating screen works by placing items to be sorted, such as marbles of different sizes, on the screen on the top layer. The entire machine vibrates in a gentle circular motion to work the material through the screens and separate impurities. Therefore, marbles of different sizes would slowly descend through the many layers of screens, usually with the largest openings at the top layer and decreasing as the marbles reach the bottom. The result is a collection of marbles sorted by size, and any dirt and extra material is removed. The amplitude of the vibrations can be adjusted to be gentle on delicate materials and more vigorous on tough items.
The mining industry is one of the largest users of vibrating screen technology. Taking the ore and minerals out of the ground creates a lot of impurities, so these organizations transport the products in a screen until the non-valuable dirt and rocks are removed from materials such as coal, iron, and ore. Screens are also used in manufacturing, especially when it is necessary to dry metal items such as ionized screws and bolts that need to be immersed in a bath. Here, containers filled with liquid and metal can be poured through the screen and separated with vibrations to ensure they dry completely. Different industries like archaeology, metallurgy, and construction also use vibrating screen technology to do their job.
