Hogfish are members of the grunt fish family and live predominantly in the Atlantic Ocean off the southern coast of the United States. They are abundant in number and have a colorful appearance. There are several types of fish that are called hogfish; these include the golden porcupine, red hog, and red-mouthed grunt.
All triggerfish belong to the class Congiopodidae, a group of ray-finned fish that thrive in shallow, temperate waters. Although edible to humans, triggerfish are primarily used as bait. Most larger fish will readily consume hogfish when used as live bait; sea trout are especially fond of them.
The upper part of the hogfish has a bluish hue, while the lower part is silvery. They have irregular stripes on the head and snout. Their scales are also colorful, with blue midpoints and orange or reddish-brown tones on the outer edges. They can be up to 30 centimeters long and usually weigh 0.45 kilograms or less. Pig is commonly confused with pinfish.
Adult triggerfish normally spawn in the spring in large bodies of water. As the young fish mature, both the adults and their young retreat to shallower waters closer to land. They are particularly attracted to areas with gently sloping ground and tend to prefer environments with grassy areas or sandbanks.
